Grounded in the whakataukī Iti Noa Ana He Pito Mata, Brown Town Volume One acknowledges the history of Aotearoa, its resilience, and the beauty that emerges even in weathered places. It is a reminder that renewal and blooming are possible after long seasons of stillness.
We invited artists to respond to this concept openly, to interpret it through their own lived experiences, and to let their art carry the truth of their journeys. The result is a collection of works from eleven Tangata Moana artists, representing communities from across the motu and moana.
These works are a love letter to our whenua, our languages, our tinana, and our collective memory. They remind us that art is not just an expression, but a form of resistance, a vessel for healing, and a seed for our collective future.
This is Volume One of what we hope will become a growing archive strengthening Indigenous voices. Our blooming is not just a moment, but an ongoing season.
